10 GRC cladding design ideas for home exteriors
GRC lets you clad an elevation in stone-like texture, deep relief or perforated screens without the weight of stone. Here are ten ways to use it, and what to specify for each.
GRC (glass fibre reinforced concrete) cladding is thin, light, non-combustible and can be moulded into almost any texture or 3D shape. That makes it the practical way to get a stone, concrete or carved look on a house elevation without loading the structure. The best designs combine one or two GRC elements, such as panels with a jali skin or fins with window surrounds, rather than using everything at once.
1. Stone-texture flat panels

Large flat panels cast against a textured mould give the look of sandstone or split stone with few, neat joints. It’s the simplest and most economical GRC cladding.
Works on: full elevations, boundary walls, podiums. Spec tip: keep panels to a size two people or a small hoist can handle, and plan joints to line up with windows and slab levels.
2. 3D geometric relief panels

Repeating pyramids, waves, diamonds or ribs catch the sun and change through the day. Relief turns a plain wall into a feature without extra colour.
Works on: entrance walls, staircase towers, a single feature bay. Spec tip: deeper relief means more material and higher cost. Check the profile in sunlight on a sample.
3. Ornate classical relief

Floral scrolls, medallions and carved borders give the look of carved stone to traditional and Indo-classical elevations, at a fraction of the cost.
Works on: bungalow façades, temple and banquet buildings, gate pillars. Spec tip: premix GRC captures fine detail well for small ornaments; larger panels are usually sprayed.
4. Jali screen as a second skin

A perforated GRC jali fixed 300–900 mm in front of balconies or windows shades the façade, gives privacy and hides AC units and services, while letting air through.
Works on: west and south elevations, balconies, staircase shafts. Spec tip: 30–35 mm thick for most homes; fix to slab edges with stainless-steel brackets.
5. Vertical fins

Slim vertical fins give a contemporary, rhythmic elevation and cut low-angle sun on east and west faces.
Works on: modern houses, commercial frontages. Spec tip: fins are slender, so their fixing to slabs or a steel frame needs proper design for wind.
6. Window surrounds and frames

Moulded architraves, sills and window hoods are a cost-effective way to add character to a simple plastered house.
Works on: every window on a classical façade, or just the main ones. Spec tip: include a drip groove under sills and hoods so rainwater doesn’t streak the wall below.
7. Cornices and bands

A crowning cornice at roof level and string bands at floor levels give an elevation proportion and shadow lines.
Works on: parapets, floor bands, boundary wall copings. Spec tip: projecting cornices need brackets or a frame. Don’t rely on mortar alone.
8. Columns and arches at the entrance

GRC column covers, capitals and arches wrap existing RCC columns to make a grand porch or gate without extra load.
Works on: porticos, porches, main gates. Spec tip: column covers come in half-shells clamped around the RCC column, so measure the actual column size on site.
9. Murals and art walls

Custom relief murals of landscapes, motifs or a family crest make a one-off feature for an entrance court or garden wall.
Works on: entrance courts, lobbies, garden walls. Spec tip: murals are made from a custom master pattern, so budget time for design approval and a sample.
10. Feature wall panels

A single designer panel wall, inside or out, behind a staircase, a reception or a garden seating area, gives impact on a small budget.
Works on: double-height walls, lobbies, terrace walls. Spec tip: interior panels can be thinner and painted to match the décor.
GRC vs other cladding materials
| Material | Look | Weight | Shapes | Fire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GRC | Stone, concrete, carved | Light for a mineral material | Any 3D shape | Non-combustible |
| Natural stone | Authentic stone | Heavy | Flat; carving is costly | Non-combustible |
| Cladding tiles | Many patterns | Medium | Flat | Non-combustible |
| ACP (aluminium composite) | Smooth metal | Very light | Flat and folded | Depends on the core; insist on fire-rated (FR) panels |
| HPL / WPC | Wood, solid colour | Light | Flat | Combustible unless fire-rated |
What affects GRC cladding cost
- Design: flat texture is cheapest; deep relief and custom murals cost more.
- Mould reuse: repeated panel types spread the mould cost over more area.
- Size and thickness: bigger and thicker panels need more material and stronger fixings.
- Finish: natural grey, white cement, pigmented or painted.
- Height and access: scaffolding and lifting on upper floors.

Frequently asked questions
Is GRC cladding good for Indian weather?
Yes. GRC made with AR glass fibre handles sun, heavy rain and temperature swings well. Protect it with a breathable sealer or exterior paint to keep the colour even.
How is GRC cladding fixed to the wall?
Using stainless-steel anchors into RCC, a galvanised or stainless sub-frame, or cast-in sockets and brackets, with movement joints between panels. Mortar alone is not a fixing.
Is GRC cladding cheaper than stone?
For carved or 3D designs, usually yes, by a wide margin. For plain flat panels, local stone can be competitive. GRC then wins on weight, consistency and design freedom.
Can GRC cladding be used inside the house?
Yes. Feature walls, lobbies, staircases and ceilings are common, usually in thinner, painted panels.
